Sneak peek: new football activities coming soon
This year, we’re working with the team behind UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 to help more girls and young women explore the exciting world of football
Why we're working together
In our Girls' Attitudes Survey, we found that two thirds of young women aged 17-21 think having less women’s sport on TV than men’s sends a message that sport is mostly for boys and men. Girls told us they’d like to see more women’s sport on TV. More than half of girls say the lack of women’s football on TV makes it seem less important than the men’s game. Four in five girls think greater visibility of women’s sport will inspire more girls to be active.
That’s why we’re so pleased to be giving girls access to top-tier women’s football. We want to inspire girls and young women to feel excited about football and confident that it’s a sport for them. But football is about even more than watching matches! We’ve worked together to create a new set of activity toppers to help girls explore all aspects of the beautiful game. There will be a topper for each section. We want every girl to be able to experience the fun and excitement that football has to offer, regardless of whether or not they get to go to matches. The toppers will be made available for free to all our members in May, but here’s an exclusive sneak peek, just for our magazine readers, so that you can include them in your planning for next term.
What are toppers?
Toppers are a new type of stand-alone activity that aren’t connected to Girlguiding’s programme. They don’t count towards theme award hours, but include a number of topics and activities that can be used flexibly to ‘top up’ girls’ experiences with Girlguiding.
About the activities
We caught up with the brains behind our new football toppers, about what they include, and the thinking behind them. Introducing Christina Shevill, programme project manager at Girlguiding, and Clare Daniels, National Innovation Manager, and Stacey Mullock, Senior Volunteering and Legacy Manager, from the Football Association.
‘From Girlguiding’s own research, we know that lots of girls feel like they don’t get enough opportunities to try activities and hobbies that are seen as being ‘for boys’. So we want to make sure that everyone can take part in our new football-focussed toppers. We want every girl to feel confident in trying out new physical skills, and we want every volunteer to have fun running the activities, even if you’ve never played football before.’ - Christina ‘We focussed the toppers on the basics. As well as introducing girls to physical ball skills like dribbling and footwork, the activities also help girls to understand different aspects of the game. For Rainbows and Brownies, that might be learning to work in a team to score a goal. Guides and Rangers can explore some of the strategy associated with football, or explore different roles such as referee, coach or commentator.’ - Clare ‘For you as a volunteer, this means you can take girls through a fun and active series of games, without needing to be an expert in football yourself. It was also important to us that no unit misses out on trying the toppers because they don’t have access to the right equipment. All the games have been designed so that you don’t need a football to play them – you can use any selection of soft balls you have on hand. For some of the games, even a pair of rolled up socks will do!’ - Stacey
“We want every girl to feel confident in trying out new physical skills.”
“The toppers are designed to be fun, active and flexible.”
‘The toppers also include ways to help girls to get involved with the UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 when the tournament kicks-off this summer. With England hosting the finals of the tournament from 6-31 July, we’re set for a really exciting summer of sport. With the toppers, girls of all ages can create their own football stadium, turning your space into a special place where girls can celebrate the tournament, and women’s football in general.’ – Clare ‘The toppers are designed to be fun, active and flexible. You can choose to complete them in the way that works best for you and your unit. The toppers from each section compliment each other, meaning that you could adapt them to work for multi-section units too, or for a district fun day. And why not celebrate completing the activities and taking part in the tournament fun with our new UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 badge, which will be coming very soon!’ - Christina So, whatever your experience with football, and whether or not you’re attending any matches this year, there’s lots you can do to show girls in your unit that football isn’t just for boys!
Our priority access group booking window for tickets to UEFA Women’s EURO 2022 has ended, but you can still get your hands on remaining tickets! Sale to the general public opens on 28 March.
