BROWNIES
Colour chase

Aim of the activity
Watch out, the colour chasers are about! Get ready to listen carefully, move quickly and work with your partner to dodge the chasers and get a colour match.
What you'll get out of it
- Play a fun, active game with your unit.
- Develop your communication, quick thinking and teamwork skills.
What you’ll need
- Coloured cones or paper – at least 4 different colours with at least 6 cones or sheets of paper for each colour. For example, 6 blue cones, 6 green cones, 6 yellow cones and 6 red cones.
- Sticky tack or tape.
- Chairs, enough to spread around the room.
Before you start
Space out chairs all over your space. Stick coloured paper or place cones on them. You could stick coloured paper around the walls of your space too.
What to do
1
Everyone, stand to one side of the space and get into pairs.
2
Listen carefully, pick someone to be your first game master - this could be your leader. Ask them to read out the rules of colour chase. Then, once everyone understands - have a practice go!
3
Ready, steady? GO!
How to play colour chase
• Choose 1 pair to be the first set of colour chasers! They must stand beside the game master before each round.
• Your game master will call out a colour, a body part and a movement. For example, yellow, right hand, skipping. Then they’ll count down from 5.
• In your pair you both need to aim for 2 different spots of the same colour and sync up your movements!
• The colour chasers’ job is to do the same movement as everyone else, but instead of finding a colour, between them they need to try to tag both partners in another pair. Together they must work out which pair to tag.
• 5,4,3,2,1...GO! So, as a pair, you’d skip to 2 different yellow spots and touch them with your right hand at the same time. You can’t touch the colour until your partner is ready.
• More than 1 player can use the same spot, but partners in a pair need to be at 2 different spots.
• Watch out for the colour chasers! If both players in a pair get tagged, they become the colour chasers, swapping with the old chasers who are now back in the game.
• Keep playing and see how long you can dodge the colour chasers.
Try it this way
Want to up the challenge? You could include coloured items around your unit meeting space for players to go to. Or call out 2 colours at once and see if pairs can work as a team to both get to the same colour. Or add in another set of colour chasers. Or have a silent round where pairs try to communicate without talking!
Things to help you
• Need some movement ideas? You could try tiptoeing, wiggling, dancing, jogging, hopping, walking, galloping, big steps, little steps... you could even try moving like animals for example penguins, snails, tigers or bees! • Listen carefully to the game master, you need to make sure you’re going to the right colour, using the right body part and doing the right movement. If you get it wrong, you could get caught out. • It’s all about teamwork! Whether you’re the colour chasers or the players - you need to work together with your partner to get to the right spots or tag players. Talk to your partner and make sure you have a plan. • Pay attention to the colour chasers, you don’t want to get caught! Warn your partner if a colour chaser is close.
