A message from our advocates

Advocate

Advocates are a youth panel group of Girlguiding young members aged 14 to 25 that lead the direction of our advocacy and research. Here's what a few of them think of this year’s Girls’ Attitudes Survey.

Alice

Anglia, aged 17

As discrimination runs rife throughout society and the consequences of Covid are being felt more deeply, it’s vital we continue to hear the voices of girls and young women. As demonstrated by this survey, society needs to change after the pandemic to allow the growth and development of the nation, fueled by young women and girls.

Eibhlinn

Ulster, aged 16

It’s clear girls and young women are active members of their communities. From fundraising and campaigning to youth groups, there’s a wide range of participation, aiding in developing vital skills. The beliefs of diversity and inclusion are central to many girls, and more action is needed to create an inclusive community for all.

Megan

London and South East England, aged 19

The survey tells us that girls and young women are very aware of the sexism and gender stereotypes they face. These gender stereotypes and attitudes have a negative impact on girls and need to be tackled.

Maddie

South West England, aged 24

It’s unsurprising to see girls and young women are feeling unsafe in many areas of life right now, this being in higher in marginalised groups. Changes are being made to education and it’s good this seems to be working. However, more needs to be done to make sure girls can enjoy their lives without fearing for their safety.

Abbie

Scotland, aged 20

It’s extremely worrying that girls and young women are struggling with their mental health and wellbeing (especially disabled and LGBTQ+ girls). Although the pandemic had a negative impact on many girls and young women’s mental health, it’s positive to hear it’s beginning to recover. However change is still needed to protect girls’ and young women’s wellbeing.
