Methodology
Girlguiding commissions CHILDWISE, leading specialists in research with children and young people, to do the Girls’ Attitudes Survey each year. A total of 3,015 girls and young women aged between 7 and 21 took part in the 2022 survey.
CHILDWISE did the survey online in March and April 2022. Most 7 to 16-year-olds did theirs in school, while the older age group took part via an online panel. CHILDWISE also interviewed young women not in education, employment or training (NEET) via the online panel.
We adapted the questionnaire to suit different age groups: 7 to 10, and 11 to 21. We asked everyone some core questions to track changes in attitudes as girls get older.
We weighted data at analysis to make sure the final sample was representative across age ranges. The boosted regional data was also down-weighted to make sure it was representative of national levels. Where we talk about the North we mean the North East and North West of England, and Yorkshire and Humberside. Where we talk about the Midlands we mean East and West Midlands, and East Anglia. Where we mention the South we mean the South East and South West of England, and London.
Questions asked with ranked positive and negative statements were combined throughout the report. All questions are based on those answering.
Who we asked
The data in these last four tables are from the girls and young women who chose to tell us their postcode, ethnic background, sexual orientation and gender identity, and if they’re disabled.
