Wellbeing and connections

Girls’ and young women’s wellbeing has been in continuous decline since we first started to measure it in 2009.

It’s been a tough couple of years for girls and young women – we’ve seen a real decline in their wellbeing since 2009.

And the Covid-19 pandemic hasn’t helped. Girls and young women are feeling more sad, lonely and anxious than last year. They’re worried about the future, their mental health and how Covid-19 will affect the rest of their lives.

But they also feel optimistic. Good news about the vaccine roll out, a greater appreciation of nature and being able to reconnect with people after lockdown has given them reasons to feel hopeful.

How you can help

Encourage girls to think about their wellbeing and give them space to safely explore their feelings. Talk about self-care and show them how to build resilience.

We have a series of mindfulness videos on our YouTube channel that you can try with your units:

  • Rainbows – The big blue whale
  • Brownies – Brownie beads
  • Guides – Checking in
  • Rangers – I’m worth it

Our Think Resilient peer education sessions will help your unit learn about resiliences and self-care from girls like them.

And use our programme to support mental health and wellbeing by working on these badges:

  • Feel good skills builder
  • Rainbows - Healthy mind interest badge
  • Brownies - Mindfulness interest badge
  • Guides - Meditation interest badge
  • Rangers - Self-care interest badge
