2-3 Degrees
Delivering 6 peer mentoring workshops for young women aged 17–24, increasing confidence across communication, leadership and goal-setting.
Girlguiding partnered with 2-3 Degrees, a youth development social enterprise, to pilot a new way of reaching young women from global majority backgrounds aged 17-24.
The project demonstrated that a peer mentoring model could strengthen confidence, leadership and personal development through a structured, girl-led programme.
Our service delivered 6 workshops, engaging 10 young women in a supportive, skills-focused environment.
Creating the programme and recruiting girls to take part
Both 2-3 Degrees and Girlguiding share an ambition: to create meaningful opportunities for young women who are facing barriers to confidence and progression. This led to the development of a bespoke pilot, based on the existing successful 2-3 Degrees peer mentoring programme.
2–3 Degrees led the recruitment process through their networks, forming a final group of 10.
- All participants were aged 17–24.
- All from global majority backgrounds.
- Most in education, with some facing barriers such as low attendance or being NEET (not in education, employment or training).
- Many are migrants and/or the first in their family to attend university.
Delivering the pilot sessions
The 6 sessions were designed to build progressively. Each workshop blended skill building, reflection and hands-on practice.
- Building self-belief. The group established trust, explored their strengths, and learned about the concept of peer mentoring.
- Values and goal setting. The girls connected personal values to confidence and decision making, set ambitious goals, and reflected on past experiences that demonstrate resilience and growth.
- Role models and networking. Female professionals shared their career journeys, and the 'Career Carousel' gave girls a chance to practise networking and ask meaningful questions.
- Practising mentoring and peer support. The group explored what makes a good mentor, designed peer support projects, and strengthened teamwork and communication.
- Final project development and reflection. Participants refined their peer mentoring ideas and reflected on their progress and learnings.
- Showcase and celebration. Girls presented their projects, celebrated achievements, and explored next steps for leadership within Girlguiding and beyond.
Evaluation and impact
The pilot created a supportive space where young women grew in confidence, leadership and ambition. This was the first all-girl project for 2-3 Degrees. They described the space as safe, positive, and influential for their future practice. Key outcomes included:
- Strong increases in self reported confidence across communication, leadership and goal setting.
- High enjoyment and weekly learning.
- This project demonstrated that a peer mentoring model can successfully engage young women and help to build their confidence and leadership skills.
