Crochet a ruffled scrunchie
We’ve loved seeing your creations from our previous embroidery and cross stitch crafts!
For this issue, we’re bringing you a crocheted ruffle scrunchie. Perfect for you, or as a thoughtful gift for a leader in your life; it also makes for a great fundraising craft to make with your unit!
In the short how-to videos below, we will give you all the handy tips and pointers you need to create your own beautiful crochet scrunchie! Please note that the tutorial will be using UK crocheting terminology. Let’s get things started!
You will need
- 2 skeins of DK yarn in different colours: we’ve used Wendy Supreme DK in baby blue for the body of the scrunchie, and for the red trim Hobbycraft’s everyday chunky yarn in shade red
- 4 mm crochet hook
- Hair elastic
- Scissors
Feel free to take inspiration from our brand colours or use any yarn you may already have.
Top tip
Push your stitches tight together, the more stitches the more ruffles!
First steps
- Start by tying a double knot to the elastic. Make sure the small yarn tail sits tightly against the hair elastic so you can weave it into the first few stitches.
- Thread the hook through the elastic, hook the yarn and pull it through. Then from the other side, wrap the yarn over the hook and then pull through the original loop. This will secure the yarn in place. Repeat this process around the elastic. This stitch is called a double crochet.
- As you crochet around the hair elastic, make sure you crochet over the excess yarn tail. Continue to do a double crochet around the elastic until there’s no space left.
- As you get to the end of the elastic, insert the hook through the top of your first stitch, yarn over, and pull through both loops.
- Continue by chaining three, this is done by yarning over and pulling through three times in a row.
Row 1
For this part of the scrunchie, we’re going to crochet three treble crochets into every stitch.
- To do a treble crochet, after you chain three, yarn over, thread the hook through the stitch where you chained three, pull through, yarn over again, pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops.
- Repeat this step on this same stitch. You can tell the stitches as they look like Vs from above.
- Yarn over, thread the hook through the stitch where you did your first treble, pull through, yarn over again, pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining two. On the first set of trebles, we’re only crocheting two, as the chain counts as a crochet.
- We now move onto the next stitch. Repeat the process we’ve just done to crochet three trebles in each stitch around the diameter of the scrunchie.
- As you reach the end of the row, insert the hook through the top of the first stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops, and chain three.
Row 2
For this part of the scrunchie, we’re going to crochet two treble crochets into every stitch.
- After you chain three, yarn over, thread the hook through the stitch where you chained three, pull through, yarn over again, pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops.
- We now move onto the next stitch and repeat the process we’ve just done to crochet two trebles in each stitch around the scrunchie.
- Yarn over, thread the hook through the second V, pull through, yarn over again, pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining two. And again, for the second crochet in this stitch - yarn over, thread the hook through the second V, pull through, yarn over again, pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining two.
- When you reach the end of row two, insert the hook through the top of the first stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops, and chain three.
Row 3
For this part of the scrunchie, we’re going to crochet one treble crochet into every stitch.
- After you chain three, yarn over, thread the hook through the stitch where you chained three, pull through, yarn over again, pull through two loops, yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops.
- We now move onto the next stitch and repeat the process on every single stitch by crocheting one treble crochet into each of them.
- When you get to the very last stitch, insert the hook through the top of the first stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops, chain one, cut the yarn and pull the tail through nice and tight.
Trim
For this last bit we’ll use red, as we’re taking inspiration from the Rainbows colour palette!
- Make a slip knot and slide your yarn into the hook. Once that is done, we’re going to do a double crochet all the way around the scrunchie. To do so, push the hook through the top of the last stitch, hook on to the yarn and pull it through.
- Then push through the next stitch, hook the yarn, then yarn over and pull through the two loops. As you continue to crochet around the scrunchie, make sure to hold the tail of the new yarn on the right and crochet over it when you reach it towards the end. This will secure it into the design and make it nice and neat.
- When you reach the end, insert the hook through the top of the first stitch, yarn over, pull through both loops and cut the yarn. Pull the tail through nice and tight.
- You can finish your scrunchie off by cutting the tail you’ve just pulled through, or you could use a knitter’s needle to thread the tail under the trim.
Now you know all the steps needed for this design, and you have a new beautiful ruffled scrunchie!
