Girls just wanna have fun

Girls just wanna have fun

Do you remember what you liked to do when you were young? Maybe you spent hours writing stories or creating works of art, or perhaps you had a favourite spot in the garden to make mud pies?

At Girlguiding, watching girls discover their passions is one of the best things about what we do. There’s so much joy in the small daily moments of exploring, trying, and doing, but they can be hard to capture. On a trip to Girlguiding Scotland, we met Brownie Penny, and Guide Zara in Aberdeen. We spent the day with them to hear about their passions and to see them do what they love.

Meet Zara, Guide and quad biker

‘My Dad used to do quad biking when he was my age. I like it because when you’re on it and moving and going fast it feels like no one can stop you and you’re just free.‘

‘I really just think about the wildlife. And the bunnies. I named them all Flopsy.’

‘I like the field. In the field you can go fastest because there’s no bumps or stones or anything.’

‘There’s some boys in my class that don’t believe I quad bike.‘

‘I love when it gets really muddy because I love washing it - I like the foam, it smells good.’

‘At Guides, working towards badges and looking through my badge book has helped me try new things. I’ve become interested in lots of them, and I really enjoyed it.’

Meet Penny, Brownie, gardener and piper

‘I like to go to my allotment. I’m growing dahlias, and beetroot and carrots. I like seeing all the pretty things that grow, and the views.'

‘My mum found a robin at the allotment - it kept flying about and then it got really close.’

‘I like this one 'cause it's pink.'

'I like playing the bagpipes. My Mum suggested I should play, so we went along to a lesson to try it out. I like that when it's someone's birthday, I can play happy birthday to them and it makes me feel happy.'
